Fabric Snake – Green – For Shaman Costume

The snakes are sold individually, so the quantity 1 is for one green snake. These fabric snakes are made of fabric filled with sheep’s wool, with simple face, red tongue and red bead eyes. Each snake measures around 90 cm in length. They can be used on a shaman costume or simply as general decorations in your house.
These were handmade by a craftsman at a local market in Mongolia.

In Mongolia, these fabric snakes are called mogoi /могой/ and are used in shamanic costumes and rituals. They can be fixed on various part of a shaman costumes such as the heart, back, limbs, armpits, shoulders, collarbone or chest. They are considered as ongons, or often associated with the water spirits, known as lus. Therefor it is believed that a spirit lives within. As such they are alive, and must always be treated with care and respect. For this reason a snake should never be stitched to a shaman’s coat, as the passing of a needle through the snake would harm or even kill it, instead the snakes hanging from a shaman’s coat are tied or bound on to it. In addition to being fixed to shaman’s coats, snakes and snake like beings are also often hung in homes as family protector spirits.

Usually the colour is chosen to represent the colour of the clothes worn by the ongod, or to represent his or her tribe’s colour. You can thus choose the colour which feel right to you.
