CHAPTER ONE: Presentation of the Mongol Cyrillic

1.1. Presentation – PART 3

Since 1930, the Latin alphabet had been used as it was, but in 1941, it was considered that the Latin alphabet was not suitable for the Mongol language, and in 1941, the Resolution No. 22/18 “On the Establishment of a New Mongol Alphabet” was issued. This resolution stated that “the Latin alphabet lacks the symbols used in the Mongol language, and that it causes many printing shortcomings and technical difficulties” which resulted in the creation and use of a new alphabet. This resolution also stated that “The further development of the country’s culture and education will proceed only through strengthening fraternal ties with the people of the Soviet Union and mastering its rich culture.” It was then decided to use the Cyrillic alphabet as the new alphabet.

At that time, the Russians, who had the closest cultural, economic, and political ties to Mongolia, did not use the Latin alphabet but used the Cyrillic alphabet (the Cyrillic alphabet being rich in letters, very few additional letters were needed to use it for the Mongol language), and many Central Asian and Siberian nations eventually abandoned the Latin alphabet and changed in favour of the Cyrillic alphabet for the same above reasons. The Buryats and Kalmyks, who are ethnic Mongols, also changed to the Cyrillic alphabet. Thus, the Russian Cyrillic alphabet was adjusted by adding the letters ö (ө) and ü (ү), and was officially adopted in 1946.
